Who uses Pecos?

PECOS is Medicare’s online provider enrollment management system. It is the national system CMS uses to register healthcare providers and suppliers for Medicare. It centralizes national data about Medicare providers and suppliers. PECOS launched in 2002.

Do I have to enroll in Pecos?

CMS is verifying physicians’ status by using its provider enrollment dataabase known as PECOS. In other words, if a physician does not have an approved enrollment record in PECOS, Medicare will not pay for home health services provided to that physician’s patients.

How do I know if a provider is enrolled in Pecos?

To determine if you have a current enrollment record in the PECOS, you can do the following:
Utilize the national file of Medicare physicians and non-physician practitioners who are eligible to order / refer and have current enrollment records in the PECOS. Utilize Internet-based PECOS.

Is NPI and Pecos the same thing?

The PECOS system is a database of providers who have registered with CMS. A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is necessary to register in PECOS. Use that identifier to search for the provider in the database. If you don’t know the provider’s NPI number, you can search for their information in the NPI registry.
