Finding the ventrogluteal site

This is the bony part that sticks out of your upper thigh near your hip. They will then locate the anterior iliac crest and place your index finger on it. The iliac crest is the “wing” of your hip bone.

What is the difference between Dorsogluteal and ventrogluteal?

The dorsogluteal site is characterised by thicker subcutaneous fat, muscle and total tissue than the ventrogluteal site. Female gender, and waist and hip circumferences are significant predictors of subcutaneous fat thickness at both sites; male gender is a significant predictor for dorsogluteal site muscle thickness.

Where do you give a ventrogluteal injection?

On the outside of the arm above the armpit in the deltoid muscle. The injection point is between the armpit and shoulder. Vastus Lateralis. On the outside of the thigh between the hip and the knee.

What is ventrogluteal muscle?

Ventrogluteal. The site involves the gluteus medius and minimus muscle and is the safest injection site for adults and children. The site provides the greatest thickness of gluteal muscles, is free from penetrating nerves and blood vessels, and has a thin layer of fat.

How far do you insert needle for intramuscular injection?

The needle should be long enough to reach the muscle without penetrating the nerves and blood vessels underneath. Generally, needles should be 1 inch to 1.5 inches for an adult and will be smaller for a child.

Do you pinch the skin for an IM injection?

Needle insertion

Insert needle at an 45o angle to the skin. Pinch up on SQ tissue to prevent injecting into muscle. Aspiration before injection is not required. Multiple injections given in the same extremity should be separated as far as possible (preferably at least 1” apart).

Why is the Dorsogluteal site not recommended?

Because of the sciatic nerve location, the dorsogluteal muscle is not recommended as an injection site. If a needle hits the sciatic nerve, the patient may experience partial or permanent paralysis of the leg.

What are the pros of using the ventrogluteal site?

With studies in recent years, it is recommended to use of ventrogluteal site instead of dorsogluteal site for injection because of it is away from the sciatic nerve and large blood vessels, it is more easy to identify and for reasons such as the subcutanous tissue is being more thinner for intramuscular injection.

What are the cons of using the ventrogluteal site?

Disadvantages: If the injection is given inferior or medially from the intended ‘upper outer quadrant’ this may result in: Damage to the sciatic nerve, leading to pain or paralysis (temporary or permanent) Inadvertent administration of the drug intravenously by entering the superior gluteal artery.

Do you aspirate ventrogluteal?

Usual sites for delivering an IM injection include the deltoid, vastus lateralis, ventrogluteal and dorsogluteal muscles. The first 3 are recommended due to their avoidance of any proximity to major blood vessels and nerves. Aspiration is NOT required for these sites.

Which muscle is used for Ventrogluteal injection?

The ventrogluteal site involves the gluteus medius and minimus muscles and is a safe injection site for adults, children, and infants. This site provides the greatest thickness of gluteal muscle that is free of penetrating nerves and blood vessels and it has a narrower layer of fat.

How do you give ventrogluteal?

Giving an IM injection into the ventrogluteal site
Find the trochanter. Find the anterior iliac crest.Place the palm of your hand over the trochanter. Give the injection between the knuckles on your index and middle fingers.Stretch the skin tight.Hold the syringe like a pencil or dart.

What happens if you give an IM injection too high?

Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration, or SIRVA, happens when a vaccine is injected too high or too deep in the shoulder. Injecting the vaccine this way can lead to intense and prolonged pain and other shoulder injuries, such as a rotator cuff tear or tendonitis.

What are the 5 injection sites?

IM injections are administered in five potential sites: deltoid (commonly used for adult vaccinations), dorsogluteal, ventrogluteal, rectus femoris, and vastus lateralis3,10,11 (Figure 1).

Is Z-track method still used?

YOU SHOULD USE the Z-track method for all I.M. injections in adults. By leaving a zigzag path that seals the needle track, this technique prevents drug leakage into the subcutaneous tissue, helps seal the drug in the muscle, and minimizes skin irritation.
