A vacuum sealer is needed for long term food storage. Ziplock bags can be sealed with a FoodSaver for a stronger seal that can be used for long-term storage. The FoodSaver will remove the air and seal the Ziplock bag, allowing the contents to stay fresh for a much longer period of time.
How long do vacuum sealed bags last?
Frozen food that is vacuum sealed lasts an average of 2-3 years, while it will last 6-12 months, on average, stored in other ways. Most vacuum sealed foods will last in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks, which is much longer than the typical 1-3 days food will last when stored conventionally in a refrigerator.
Is there a difference in vacuum seal bags?
Each different brand of vacuum sealer has designed their machine to operate at a slightly different temperature, so using Vacuum Sealer Bags from other manufacturers can be problematic, as they may not seal properly or may melt creating a mess or causing damage.
Can you use any bags with the FoodSaver?
If you want to use your FoodSaver® appliance to re-seal, but not vacuum package a bag (without removing the air first) you can use it on Mylar type (strong, thin polyester) or stiff plastic bags, not any other types. For example, you can re-seal potato chip bags.
