“Kickdown” and “TV” cables aren’t really the same thing. Let’s take it from the top: Many old-school automatic transmissions use both a governor and a vacuum modulator to help regulate automatic shift timing. The governor works off of vehicle speed and engine rpm.
What is the plug on the side of a 700R4?
the plug on the left side only controls the converter clutch. you really need to use the lock up feature,if not you will eventually burn up the trans. if you do a lot of interstate driving.as the converter will not get any cooling lube with the lockup feature not working.
How do you adjust the cable on a 700r transmission?
When you press the cable adjuster release button, pull the cable adjuster forward a few clicks. This will cause the transmission to shift earlier. If the transmission shifts too early, grab the cable adjuster so it doesn’t move, press the release button, and move the cable back toward the bracket a few clicks.
Will a 700R4 work without a computer?
To run a 700-R4 trans behind a carbureted engine without a computer, at the very least the TV cable must be hooked up to the carburetor and properly adjusted. Not just a simple kickdown cable like your TH350 analogue, the TV cable controls line pressure and shift points.
Can I drive without a kickdown cable?
Shouldn’t be a problem. The cable adjusts system pressure, so shift pressure. With the cable fully retracted it will shift lazy/slip a lot, if the cable was pulled fully out it will shift more firmly, less slip.
Do I need a kickdown cable?
That is all, and as such, is NOT required unless you want that functionality. On the OD transmissions (700R4, 2004R, etc.) the “kickdown” is NOT that. It’s a TV cable, which operates the Throttle Valve inside the transmission, and is NECESSARY to be installed and PROPERLY adjusted so you don’t burn up the transmission.
Where is the kickdown cable located?
The kick down cable is mounted to the carburetor, or, in the case of fuel injected vehicles, the throttle body. It runs from the butterfly arm on the carburetor down to the side of the transmission, where it attaches to an arm that allows the transmission to shift gears.
What speed should 700R4 shift at?
We will say that, when properly adjusted, the First-to-Second shift should occur at 15-20 mph; Second-to-Third shift at 25-30 mph; and Third-to-Fourth shift at 40-45 mph.
How do I identify a 700r4 transmission?
The easiest way to identify if you have a 700r4 is to raise your car and check the bolts around the transfer case. The 700r4 and the 4L60 transmission uses a bolt pattern of 16 bolts, so if the transmission looks like the picture and you can see 16 bolts, you most likely have a 700r4 or a 4L60 transmission.
How do I know if my kick down cable is bad?
Listed below are a few of the warning signs that a problem with the kickdown cable exists.
The transmission shifts hard. An automatic transmission has multiple parts that are engineered to produce a smooth transition from one gear to another. The car shifts early and fast. The transmission shifts slow and late.
How does a throttle valve cable work?
The throttle valve cable’s function is to transfer the movements of the throttle at the carburetor to the throttle valve plunger in the valve body. This allows throttle valve pressure and line pressure to increase according to throttle opening for gear upshifting. It also controls when the transmission downshifts.
