Usually made of durable cotton canvas, a pastry cloth makes an excellent work surface for rolling out pie crusts, biscuits, cookies, and other doughs. Rubbing a little flour into the cloth prevents sticking without adding excess flour to the dough, keeping the pastry light and flaky.
What can I use instead of a pastry cloth?
So, having something between dough and surface helps to move that dough quite easily. Yes, I do use other things; parchment paper, roulepats and silpats, plastic wrap, wax paper. All of them will do the job.
How do you use a dough cloth?
Fold the cloth into a series of wavy creases to hold the dough during proofing. The linen should have sufficient body to stand up. This keeps the shape and structure of the dough intact. Then transfer shaped baguette dough into the folds, cover and let rise.
Can you wash a pastry cloth in the washing machine?
Some pastry cloths may shrink when washed, though some will survive the washing machine still usable. In washing machines, the cloth needs to be washed on a delicate cycle, and air-dried, not put in the dryer. Before it’s completely dry, rub it and tug it a few times to help to stay pliable.
What is bread cloth?

What is a couche? Literally, “bed” or “resting place,” a couche is a tea towel or piece of thick canvas or linen that provides support for boules or baguettes. Couch cloths are sometimes placed into baskets to support round boules, or they can be folded around baguettes, like the photo below.
What is a rolling pin cover used for?
A rolling pin cover is a long tube of stretchable cloth, like a sock open at both ends, made of cotton. You put it onto and over a rolling pin to cover the roller part completely, and then brush some flour on the cloth. Its purpose is to help prevent dough from sticking to the rolling pin.
How do you use a rolling pin and pastry cloth cover?
To use, just rub flour into the canvas cloth and the stretchy rolling pin sleeve and you’re ready to go. The fabric absorbs excess flour and prevents dough from sticking.
How do you wash bread cloth?
If you feel you need to wash it, use cold water and hang it to dry. The non-washing way to keep it clean: After using it, brush it off, then hang it to dry. If there are any bits of dough, let them dry first, then flake off with your fingers.
How do you care for a pastry mat?
Soak mat(s) in very hot water with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for 10 minutes. Wearing kitchen gloves, scrub clean under the water with a sponge or towel, then dry on a drying rack or with a towel. Repeat if necessary.

The first thing you’re going to do is take your flour coated clothes and soak them in a tub of lukewarm water. Then, you wait. If luck is on your side, the water should slowly dissolve the flour into looser bits and they’ll peel off on their own. For any leftover residue, it should become soft enough to scrape off.
What kind of towel do you use to proof bread?
First of all, make sure the towel you’re using is a finely-woven, non-textured cotton cloth. Terry cloth or waffle-weave towels will end up sticking to the dough like crazy. A piece of canvas or linen works great, or even a large man’s handkerchief (clean and unused!).
Do you wash a Couche?
Your couche does not require laundering after each use. May be used for about a month without washing, even if you bake bread frequently. Simply shake out the excess flour from the cloth and hang to dry thoroughly before folding and storing.
Do linen bags keep bread fresh?
Not only do linen bags look lovely on your kitchen counter, they also save you (and the environment) a lot of paper and plastic. Storing your bread in a linen bag leaves you with bread that stays fresher longer. Unlike plastic, which turns bread tough and soggy, linen lets the bread breathe.
