Definitions. kcmil—In the North American electrical industry, conductors larger than 4/0 AWG are generally identified by the area in thousands of circular mils (kcmil), where 1 kcmil = 0.5067 mm². A circular mil is the area of a wire one mil in diameter.
Is AWG the same as Kcmil?
Kcmil sizes are used instead of AWG for sizes larger than 4/0 AWG. The smallest standard size is 250 kcmil, the largest 2000 kcmil. The sizes follow no obvious logic.
What does Kcmil stand for?
Glossary Term: kcmil
MCM is an abbreviation for thousands of circular mils, an old measurement of wire gauge.
How can I get Kcmil?
Wire Size Calculations
The n gauge wire’s cross sectional area An in kilo-circular mils (kcmil) is equal to 1000 times the square wire diameter d in inches (in). The n gauge wire’s cross sectional area An in square inches (in2) is equal to pi divided by 4 times the square wire diameter d in inches (in).
What is bigger 2 AWG or 4 AWG?
The bigger the AWG number, the smaller the physical size of the wire.
What is the largest wire size?
The largest standard size is 0000 AWG, and 40 AWG is the smallest standard size. It may also be called Brown & Sharpe wire gauge or simply the gauge of the wire. AWG is for single-strand, solid, round, electrically conductive wire.
Does AWG include insulation?
Wire thickness is measured in gauge; in North America, American Wire Gauge (AWG) is the standard notation. The table below provides conversion to inches for solid, round, and bare conductors (insulation removed). A larger AWG number indicates a smaller conductor. Typical household wire for a 15-amp circuit is 14 AWG.
What is 1000kcmil?
1000 MCM / 1000 KCMIL 600-volt Copper THHN THWN-2 is used as a building wire for commercial and industrial applications. THHN stands for Thermoplastic High Heat-resistant Nylon-coated.
What size wire is 750 Kcmil?
Specifications: Size AWG: 750. Weight per 1,000 ft: 2480 lbs. Outside Diameter: 1.170 inches.
What is Thhn insulation?
THHN is a thermoplastic high-heat-resistant, nylon-coated wire. It’s designed with a specific insulation material, temperature rating, and condition of use for electrical wire and cable.
How do you convert mils to Cmils?
Converting Circular Mil to metric units
1 circular mil = 5.066 x 10-10 m2 = 5.066 x 10-6 cm21 m2 = 1.974 x 109 circular mil.1 cm2 = 1.974 x 105 circular mil.
What is 350 MCM wire?
This wire features a 350 AWG stranded bare copper conductor, PVC insulation, and a Nylon jacket. This bare copper building wire has a voltage rating of 600V and a maximum temperature of 90°C. It is suitable for use as general-purpose wiring for installation in conduit, cable trays, or other recognized raceway.
What is wire CMA?
Cir Mils or CMA = Circular Mil Area which is equal to 1/1000 (0.001) of an inch in diameter or 0.000507 MM.
How is Kcmil measured?
The diameter of a solid 500 KCMIL conductor would be √500,000 = 707.1 mils. To find the minimum diameter of each strand, we divide the solid diameter by the square root of the number of strands, which is 707.1 / √37 = 116.2 mils per strand.
