For more information, visit our medical review board. Outside the body, sperm can live for about 15 to 30 minutes in the right conditions. In a hot tub or bath, sperm can only live for a few seconds to a few minutes. If sperm is frozen under the right conditions, it could live indefinitely.

Can sperm die in tap water?

How long can sperm live on environmental surfaces? They die as they dry out, so it depends on how quickly they dry. They also are killed by fresh(tap) water due to osmotic shock(they “explode”).

Can you get pregnant from sperm in water?

No. Sperm are strong swimmers, but only when they’re inside a body. That means if you ejaculate into a swimming pool, no one is going to get pregnant. Pregnancy is only possible when you actually ejaculate on or into someone’s vagina.

Can sperm go through water?

Even in a bath tub at body temperature, water is not a good element for sperm to survive in. Not only are sperm dispersed in water, but they’re separated from the fluids that protect them. Also, it’s extremely unlikely that water containing live sperm would get into the vagina.
